Review

FINALLY! 1001 Albums! Woohoo! But it ain't over yet, going back to Jack Elliott and Hugh Masekela in the next few days to completely finish stage one of this insane project! But it is finally done!

So Get Behind Me Satan is not the best of The White Stripes albums, but this still means that it is better than 99% of the stuff out there. Here they go for more experimental things, putting a lot of noise in the middle of their tracks while keeping their very organic sound.

This is not to say that they are in any way less melodic, it is full of tracks you can sing along to from Little Ghost to My Doorbell. So in the end even if doesn't live up to White Blood Cells or Elephant it is still something I'll be very happy to add to my ipod.

4. My Doorbell

Review

1000 albums! Let's party like it's 1999! But really we should save it for tomorrow where I'm actually getting to 1001! And then filling up two older reviews! And we can celebrate then again! And then the updates 20 albums which will require another celebration. Oh and I got some money I was owed today! Yay!

So Beck has given us innovative sample music, great acoustic stuff and with Guero he pretty much mashes these two together to make something new and yet strangely reminiscing of his previous stuff.

So I am again quite weary of recognising the crazy scientologist's quality. But he is good and you need only put on E-Pro to realise it. That being said this isn't really the strongest of his albums. So fun and all but not really up there with his best stuff, Odelay will always be Odelay.

Review

Down to 2 albums to finish this! I will then be going back to two albums in the past that I didn't get in time to review and do the updates for the new edition of the list! And then this will go on with other stuff... I'm getting the Mojo Collection book and doing all the albums that do not overlap here. So loads of new music coming in again. I might be doing this until I die.

Now lets get to M.I.A.! She mixes all kinds of stuff and makes a pleasing cacophony indeed! She is basically helping develop what might be called "guerilla pop" a kind of world-influenced, politically aware dancy hip-hop/pop. She isn't the first but she is definitely the first to get some wider recognition.

Since M.I.A. other bands have moved the "genre" further, people like Buraka Som Sistema draw from a different continent but are nevertheless developing a pretty worthy and well rounded musical style. No surprise M.I.A. would later collaborate with them. Great fun and deep stuff.

Trivia

From Wikipedia:

M.I.A. wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the album and created the basic backing tracks using a Roland MC-505 sequencer/drum machine given to her by long-time friend Justine Frischmann. Collaborators included Switch, Diplo, and Richard X. The album's title is the political code name used by her father, Arul Pragasam, during his involvement with Sri Lankan Tamil militant groups, and themes of conflict and revolution feature heavily in the lyrics. Musically, the album incorporates styles that range from hip hop and electroclash to funk carioca and punk rock.

Review

Another album by the Kings of Leon which is frankly a bit redundant. This is not to say it isn't great stuff or that it doesn't live up to their first album but it does feel like more of the same with an added dose of pretension.

Their whole gimmick of Southern backwoods boys who are "natural hipsters" stinks a bit as the music is clearly inspired from sources much further afield. Of course there is some CCR here, but there is even more Strokes.

So to me the sheen that I could see in their first album has slightly worn off by now, and good as it is, and there is in some ways slight improvements, the novelty value has worn off.

Trivia

From Wikipedia:

The original version of the album featured a white background and an orchid, the second featured a black cover with a different kind of orchid. The second also contained the bonus track "Where Nobody Knows", and on both albums the flower is positioned in a suggestively sexual position.
